I'm new here, so I don't know if this has been discussed before- but is there any reason I don't have a spiffy trade reprint of WW 178-196 on my shelf already?

Remastering of the Art/colors is needed for those issues. I'd imagine though, that a Diana Prince Slipcase, collecting Sekowsky's run on the book is a possibility. I'd buy it. But another part of it is that Wonder Woman doesn't sell as well as Superman or Batman.

But yeah, a Slipcased collection for the entire Diana Prince Period (anyone got a map of it?) or the JLA Trials Saga would rock!

*ahem*

A Sekowsky Supergirl collection would also hit the spot.

I've never been the biggest Sekowsky fan--I used to think his JLA work was really stiff, but I've come to realize that a lot of that was the work of Bernard Sachs because I really like the Sekowsky WW in Diana's own book.

So, yeah, count me in on this.

Yeah, you're right about the inker. There is a world of improvement in the JLA Archives between Sekowsky/Sacchs and Sekowsky/Greene.

Do we know that?
It was very late '60s/early '70s, after all. Pretty late, as these things go.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are at least good black & white stats in existence. If re-coloring is all that would be needed, it could easily be a candidate for paperback reprinting.

I think a lot of people place too much importance on the connection between current comics and the chances of an Archive. For instance, I think H-E-R-O will have to be phenomenally succesful (think Dark Knight, Watchmen, New Teen Titans) in order to have any significant affect on the likelihood of an Archive. However, I do think that the chances of a Sekowsky TPB (I don't think it will be a hardcover) is closely tied to the reaction to the current storyline in Wonder Woman.

I'm going strictly on thirty year old memories here, but wasn't the Mike Sekowsky Diana Prince/Wonder Woman much sexier in her own book, as opposed to the way she was drawn in the Justice League? Now, I enjoyed Sekowsky's Justice League. It might have been the difference in the inkers. Was any part of Sekowsky's run on Wonder Woman inked by Dick Giordano? He was one on those artists who really knew (or knows) how to draw women.

Giordano actually drew the last few issues, and yeah, he sure does draw sexy women.

And Giordano did ink Sekowsky through his mod WW run - by far the best inker to team with him IMO. Even leaving aside his JLA work, you can look at the contemporary "mod Supergirl", which was inked by Jack Abel, and it doesn't measure up.

Another series that deserves to be reprinted is Giordano's Sarge Steel series. OT, but true nonetheless.

I kind of feel that the first glimpse of Sekowsky's mod Wonder Woman was in the JLA/JSA crossover with Earth 3, in the person of Superwoman. Superwoman is just so much more sexier than Sekowsky's WW, but very similar to mod Diana.

But if you work backward from mod Diana to JLA Wonder Woman you can sort of see a bit of the mod girl inside the star spangled Amazon--you just have to look at her through Snapper Carr's eyes (man, what a puberty he had)!

For what it is worth I seem to recall reading somewhere that Sekowsky drew a story, apparently for his own amusement, wherein a naked Wonder Woman was being ogled (or more than ogled?) by various members of the JLA.
Needless to say, the story was never was published.
Kind of ironic, as in my opinion, when Sekowsky was pencilling the JLA I thought his Wonder Woman was most unsexy, but then again he might not have been helped by his inker Bernard Sachs, who didn't seem to have much of an idea of muscular definition or body shape, particularly of the female variety.

I should add that Diana and I-Ching also appeared in 240-242 of Superman, but since it was the tail end of the Sand Superman saga, they don't really fit well in the archive.

Quite Frankly the Sand Superman saga should be a TPB itself!

Oh yes, there was also a Jerry Lewis issue featuring Diana during this period, but I have no idea what was in this issue - I doubt anyone would miss it, though.

She also had a guest appearance in Lois Lane #93 in an uninspired story by Robert Kanigher with art by Novick/Esposito. Rather awkward - Kanigher's using the mod WW character, given the apparent animosity between him and Sekowsky at the time.

I'd be delighted to have at least the Sekowsky mod WW work reprinted.

I see now that David did include that one - my bad.

For my money the B&B 87 "The Widowmaker" is the best of the appearances outside of WW - the rest I could take or leave.

Agreed - and hardly surprising, since it was by the same Sekowsky/Giordano team.

I'd also like to go on record to say that a big part of why I love this run of issues is Dick Giordano.

He really gives Sekowsky's pencils a slick polish that simply doesn't exist in his other work. His own run (200-203) was beautiful to look at and he even made Don Heck's art look pretty.

I often go out of may way to get Giordano work. His status does seem to give a book a touch of class.

Oh, I think we need the whole "white" period. Can't miss issues drawn by Giordano and written by Delany and covers by Jeff Jones. I don't really care about any of the teamups, but leaving them out makes it an awkward sized batch of material, so toss 'em in, I guess.

I think the chances are nil for reprinting the "whole" white period (and wouldn't it be cool if DC issued it as a giant hardcover called "the White Album"? No? Well, I thought so anyway).

The Mod Diana also appeared in JLA #69 and #100-102 which will be in the JLA Archives anyway, making their inclusion redundant. As already stated, the Superman guest appearance doesn't really stand alone (and should be collected in a long-overdue Sandman Saga TPB anyway).

Even leaving all that aside, DC knows they would sell a couple hundred or so copies of this AT MOST... and, even if DC could secure permission, the legal expenses involved in reprinting WONDER WOMAN #202 (let's not even mention the Jerry Lewis story!) would cut into the profits even more. Lawyers charge decent-sized fees even for writing up routine paperwork, I'm sure.

Sorry to sound like such a wet blanket, but unless there's a big upswing in "mod WW" or Sekowsky fandom I'm not holding my breath on a white period TPB. I bet a lot of comics PROS would love to see it happen, though, considering all the little homages that have slipped in over the last few years.

Bite your tongue!

I have this issue and it's a real treat. Lots of Amazons and armour.

Any time Bob Oksner illustrated Wonder Woman it was a cause for celebration.

What happened in issue 202 that would cause legal problems?
